If you’ve ever visited the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin, you know what a special place it is. The history, beaches, fishing and nearby Apostle Islands draw visitors from all over the world. Jon Sherwood and Gina Monroe have a beautiful wooded property that is close to the town of Bayfield, yet has a get-away-from-it-all feel. After living all over the world, Jon and Gina chose to come back to northern Wisconsin for the fresh air, clean and crystal waters of Lake Superior, and natural beauty that surrounds them each and every day.
Their business, Turtle Yurts, is made up of four 20’ Colorado Yurts nestled among the north woods of their property. They have fire pits and walking trails, and each yurt has electricity, heat and air conditioning. The interior design features a queen-size bed sitting under the clear dome to watch the moon and stars above. There is a sitting area, as well as a bathroom, complete with shower and flush toilet.
Jon and Gina chose to build yurts for their guests because they wanted to create something different and exciting for people- to give them an opportunity for a unique glamping getaway. Gina explained, “Our hope was that yurts would allow people to slow down and enjoy the outdoors while maintaining certain amenities at the same time.”
They looked at other yurt companies, but chose to work with Colorado Yurt Company because, as Gina explained, “They were the best value, especially the shipping, and their customer service outdid anyone else we spoke to.” In addition, “The ordering process was easy and efficient. Shipping worked well, and items were well-packed.”
They opened for business in the spring of 2020. Jon adds, “We love your yurts and so do our guests. We are booked solid this summer and into September.” Their plan is to offer the yurts for rent from April to October. Jon and Gina expect a full calendar of bookings when it’s time to view the autumn leaves.
