Building & Energy Codes

Getting Started

Know the codes before building

The yurt is a unique and memorable addition to any piece of land!

If you plan to locate your yurt in a rural area it may not need to be permitted, but building code requirements can vary greatly so it’s best to check with your local authorities prior to your yurt purchase.

Yurts are classified by permitting authorities in several different ways, including as a permanent structure or temporary structure. They may also be viewed as an outbuilding much like a garage or storage building. The best way to start is by taking our brochure, suggested deck plans, and information about snow loads and wind capacities to your local planning and zoning office. If they need more information, we can provide you with engineering data compiled by an independent, based engineering firm. In some cases, the permitting office will require that the engineering data be wet stamped (certified) by an engineer from your state.

We can provide this for most states. Don’t hesitate to call us at 1.970-240-2111 for more information about our engineering.

Key Considerations

Putting a Colorado Yurt on your land is not complicated, but there are several considerations to keep in mind as you sketch out your yurt dreams.

Deck Plans

Understand your building needs first. Want a heated concrete platform for your yurt or an extended deck to place a few chairs? Either way, you’re going to need to arrange for something to place your yurt upon. We don’t supply decking unless you want SIPs panels, so it’s important to understand what you’ll need to arrange before your yurt is pitched.

Utilities

If you have access to electricity and/or water on your property, these lines can be run to any location under your yurt and brought up through the floor. Pipes, outlets, and light switches may then be placed wherever convenient. If you decide to add electricity or plumbing to your yurt, we suggest starting with a floor plan before building your deck, noting where the electrical and plumbing will need to come through the floor.

Energy Codes

Our new Prodex insulation creates a shield that effectively blocks heat conduction. With an impressive R-value of 22, our Prodex product enables our constructions to meet the stringent building code criteria in counties where such regulations apply. If you don’t have access to electricity on your property, you can install solar panels for your off-grid property.

Environmentally Friendly

Compared to other shelters of similar size, ability, and functionality, Colorado Yurts are a low-impact shelter with a small environmental footprint, but many locations require some form of building or planning & zoning permit to pitch a yurt.
